Ganesh Tok - A small temple of God Ganesh nests on the
hilltop at an altitude of 6500 ft. and 7 kms/45 minutes drive from Gangtok A
panoramic view of Gangtok town and breathtaking scene of mighty Mt.
Kanchendzonga and Mt.Sinilochu, small cafeteria is opened with parking and wash
room facility.
Tsomgo Lake - it literally means the "source of the
lake" and is located at a distance of 34 kms/3hrs from Gangtok.This serene lake
is situated at an altitude of 12400ft. The lake is about 1 km long oval in shape
with average depth of 15 meters,lend a pristine beauty to this place.Lake is
considered sacred by the local people. A placid lake remains frozen during the
winter months, variety of flowers like Primulas,Blue and Yellow Poppies,rare
rhododendrons species are seen during this
time. It is also an ideal habitat of high altitude
birds.The lakes has a few rainbow trout and if you are lucky you may catch a
glimpse at them.Tourist can visit Tsomgo Lake though out the year,Yak rides are
one of the extra curricular activities available.It is open for both the
Foreigners and Indians.Foreigners visitors are allowed in a group of two or more
with a permit obtained through Travel Agents registered with the Tourism & Civil
Aviation Department ,Government of Sikkim.
Baba Harbhajan Singh Temple - It is built in the memory
of Harbhajan Singh,a Sepoy in the 23rd Punjab Regiment,the temple lies between
the Tsomgo Lake and the Jelep - La.In october 1968,while escorting a column of
mules carrying provisions, he fell into a stream and drowned and it is also
believed that he went missing while patrolling the border,he appeared in a dream
of his fellow soldiers and expressed a desire that a monument to be built in his
memory, then built monument that has over the years acquired the status of a
pilgrimage center. Believers leave a bottle of water to be collected a week
later to be used for its healing power.52 kilometers from Gangtok and situated
at an altitude of 13600 ft. It is open only for Indian Nationals.
Nathula Pass - Indo - China border,situated at an
altitude of 14600 ft and 57 kms from Gangtok. Nathula pass the old trade route
to Tibet from Sikkim and was closed for many years but at present it has been
opened for trading. A place to visit and is open only for Indian Nationals from
Wednesday to
Sunday ( five day a week)with
a permit obtained through the Tourism & Civil Aviation Department ,Government of
Sikkim.
